Ruling on making and bringing taziyah into mosques

‎ Question: In our neighborhood, there is a mosque belonging to the Barelvi sect. During Muharram, they make a taziyah and bring it to the mosque. They also hold sessions of elegy recitations and organize sermons and advisory gatherings in the memory of Sayyiduna Hussain (R.A). Is it permissible in Shariah to bring taziyah into a mosque and hold such gatherings?

‎Answer: Firstly, Islam strictly prohibits mourning over the deceased for more than three days. There are several warnings in the ahadith regarding this matter. Secondly, there is no concept of making a taziyah in Islam, let alone bringing it into a mosque. Such acts are against the Shariah and considered an innovation.

‎The practice of taziyah-dari and marsiya khwani is prohibited everywhere and at all times. It is a major sin. Specifically, performing these acts in mosques is a grave transgression and a serious disobedience to Allah, which invites divine wrath. Muslims must repent from such actions. Those who persist in these practices are considered fasiq (sinners) and are liable for disciplinary action (tazir).
