Ruling on the punishment of those who commit shirk (polytheism) and bid'ah (innovation) and how to deal with them
Question: What is the Islamic ruling on those who intentionally commit shirk and bid'ah?
Answer: Shirk is the greatest sin, and the Quran warns of its unforgivability. If there is an Islamic government and a Muslim commits shirk or kufr (disbelief) that leads to apostasy, and they do not repent but instead persist in their apostasy despite being advised, the Islamic government will execute them. If the innovation does not lead to shirk or kufr, the perpetrator will be punished.
Since the implementation of these rulings is difficult in the absence of an Islamic government, one should sever ties with the polytheist, including familial relationships, greetings, and social interactions. Similarly, one should sever ties with the innovator, so that they may repent due to the hardship.''
