  1. Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad al Bazzaz al Bistami narrated to us in Nisabur—Abu al Qasim Fadl ibn Abi al Harb Ahmed al Jurjani narrated to us—Abu Bakr Ahmed ibn al Hassan al Harshi al Hiri narrated to us—Abu Al ‘Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya’qub al Asamm narrated to us—Muhammad ibn al Hassan ibn al Arabi narrated to us—Muawiyah ibn ‘Amr narrated to us—Hazm ibn Abi Hazim narrated to us, who said—I heard Muslim Abu al Aswad saying—I heard Talq ibn Habib saying:

We went from Basrah to Madinah to look into the killing of Amir al Mu’minin ‘Uthman. Upon reaching Madinah we agreed to disperse, with some of us going to ‘Ali, others to Hassan, and some to the Mothers of the Believers.

I went to Aisha radiya Llahu ‘anha and greeted her.

She greeted back and asked, “Who are you?”

I said, “From the people of Basrah.”

She asked, “From which tribe in Basrah?”

I said, “Bakr ibn Wa’il.”

She asked, “Which family from Bakr ibn Wa’il?”

I said, “From Banu Qais ibn Tha’labah.”

She said, “The same tribe of so and so?”

I replied, “Yes.”

I then asked, “O Mother of the Believers, why was ‘Uthman, Amir al Mu’minin, killed?”

She replied, “By Allah, he was killed unjustly. May Allah curse his murderers and avenge ibn Abi Bakr. May Allah bring upon A’yan[1] of Bani Tamin a great calamity and burn the blood of Banu Budayl for their misguidance. May Allah shoot down al Ashtar with an arrow from His arrows.”

He [the narrator] said, “By Allah, there is no respite from Allah[2] except that they were afflicted by her curse.”[3]

NEXT⇒ 33. ‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu submitting himself to the will of Allah; as seen by him in the dream, until he was killed

[1] His full name is A’yan ibn Dabi’ah al Majashi’i. Majashi’i is a sub clan of Tamim ibn Daram. He was the one who attacked the carriage of Sayyidah Aisha radiya Llahu ‘anhaAl Fitnah wa Waq’at al Jamal by Saif ibn ‘Umar (pg. 152).

[2] This is how it appears in the original work, Ibn Shabbah reports it as, “There was not a signal one of them,” and al Tabarani reports it as, “There was not a man from the group.”

[3] The isnad is Da’if but the tradition from Sayyidah Aisha radiya Llahu ‘anha is authentic due to corroborating narrations. In this chain there is Muhammad ibn al Hassan ibn al A’rabi whose condition is unknown. There is a group who corroborated this narration, amongst them is ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abdul Wahab as recorded by al Tabarani in Mujam al Kabir (133). As well Musa ibn Ismail and Khalid ibn ‘Abd ‘Aziz al Thaqafi in Tarikh al Madinah of Ibn Shabbah (2201) and (2202), Abu Dawood al Tayalisi also narrates it as recorded by al Bukhari in Tarikh al Kabir (4/310), except they mentioned the narrator as “Talq ibn Khashaf” who is a companion. This is authentic. This is supported by the fact that Talq ibn Habib is from ‘Anaz and not from Bakr ibn Wa’il as mentioned in the tradition. Tarikh al Kabir 4/310.
