  1. Al Qati’i states—’Abdullah ibn Ahmed narrated to us—Ibrahim ibn Sa’id al Tabari al Jawhari narrated to us—Sa’id ibn Muhammad al Warraq narrated to us—Fudayl ibn Ghazwan narrated to us—Abu al Mughirah al Dhuhli narrated to us—Fulfulah narrated to me:

Hassan ibn ‘Ali said, “I saw the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam leaning on the ‘Arsh in my sleep. I then saw Abu Bakr clutching the knot of the Prophet’s salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam loincloth. I then saw ‘Umar clutching the knot of Abu Bakr’s loincloth. I then saw ‘Uthman clutching the knot of ‘Umar’s loincloth. I then saw blood pouring from the sky.”

Hassan narrated this and in attendance were some Shia, they said, “Did you not see ‘Ali?”

Hassan answered, “There is no one I would like to see more clutching the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam than ‘Ali, but this is a dream.”

‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amr [Abu Mas’ud][1] said, “You find it hard to accept the dream of Hassan? [Let me realte to you something then] I was with the Prophet on an expedition and the Muslims suffered tremendously, until the despair was manifest on the face of the Muslims and glee on the faces of the hypocrites. When the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam saw this he said, ‘By Allah, the sun will not set until sustenance arrives.’ ‘Uthman knew Allah and His Messenger were telling the truth. He went with his conveyance and came across a caravan of fourteen[2]. He bought it and all the food they had, sending seven to his family and seven to the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.

When the Companions saw the caravan coming, the faces of the Companions lit up and the faces of hypocrites darkened with despair.

The Prophet asked, “What is this?”

They said, “‘Uthman sent it as a gift.”

I saw the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam raising his hands and invoking prayer for ‘Uthman. I have never seen before nor after that incident, the Prophet invoking prayers for someone as he did for ‘Uthman, saying, “O Allah give ‘Uthman, O Allah do this for ‘Uthman; keeping his hands up until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen.”[3]
